Goethe Award for Psychoanalytic Scholarship 2005 Finalist!

>>Read about it<<

Our Purpose
The purposes of Section III include pursuing the following goals for women and men in a gendered society; to support scholarship and professional development; to develop leadership skills; to promote networking opportunities; and to deepen understanding of contemporary, gender-related concerns involving work, play, and family.

Section III applies psychoanalytic theory, research, clinical experience, and mentoring to these issues and others in which gender is a significant factor. The Section offers both scholarly and clinically oriented programs at the Division’s meetings, actively encourages its members in their political ambitions, and maintains liaisons with other groups that share its concerns.

Membership
Membership is open to all members of the Division of Psychoanalysis. Graduate student members are particularly encouraged to join in order to take advantage of the Section’s interest in supporting professionals in the early stages of their careers. Your support through membership is needed to continue our progress and our voice within the Division.

We Offer
In return for your support, the Section sponsors two panels a year on topics relevant to gender issues, one at the Spring Meeting of Division 39 and one at the national APA Convention. It also offers members the chance to develop experience in leadership and provides opportunities for networking, mentoring, and support of scholarship. Click here to visit a comprehensive listing of Section III members who presented at the 2005 Division 39 Spring Meeting.

Why Join?

Now in our twentieth year,

Section III continues to make vital contributions to the intellectual life of the Division – by presenting discussions about women in leadership, clinical concerns in the treatment of women and men as they involve gender, and sustaining a voting presence on the larger Division 39 Board of Directors.

___

Many Section III leaders have gone on to positions of leadership in the Division. The Section publishes a directory of members that is useful for making client referrals.

Psychoanalytic Reflections On a Gender-free Case

Edited By:

Ellen L.K. Toronto, Gemma Ainslie, Molly Donovan, Maurine Kelly, Christine C. Kieffer, Nancy McWilliams

Book By Section III Members

The feminist analytic thinkers whose work is collected here confront the meaning established by the assignment of gender and the uncertainty created by its absence.

The articles brought together in Psychoanalytic Reflections on a Gender-free Case: Into the Void address a cross-section of significant issues that have both chronicled and facilitated the changes of the last two decades of feminist psychoanalysis. Difficult issues which have previously been ignored (such as the pregnancy of the therapist or sexual abuse regarded as more than a fantasy) are considered first. The book goes on to address family perspectives as they interact and shape the child's experience of growing up male or female. Other topics covered are the authority of personal agency as influenced by the language and theory of patriarchy, male-centered concepts that consistently define women as inferior, and the concept of gender as being co-constructed within a relationship. Thus the authors explore the notion of gender identity as an ongoing negotiation among multiple gendered selves.

The gender-free case presented here will fascinate all psychoanalysts interested in exploring ways of grappling with the elusive nature of gender, as well as those studying gender studies.
